Gum Recession

Naperville Periodontics

Gum recession is the progressive loss of gum tissue over time. This is generally caused by incorrect oral hygiene habits or periodontal disease. It is most common in people over the age of 40, but can begin much sooner in some cases. If left untreated, gum recession can result in the exposure of teeth roots, and if severe it can result in tooth loss.

Common symptoms that may be found with gum recession include teeth sensitivity, visible teeth roots, teeth appearing longer, inflamed or bleeding gums.

Treatment of gum recession is varied depending on the cause. Some common treatments include:

  • Oral hygiene education
  • Professional teeth cleaning
  • Scaling and root planing
  • Gum grafting
  • Gum tissue regeneration
